You Took Me By Surprise

I made a derring-do decision against all wisdom and advice
I knew that I was sailing into choppy waters, that I was treading on thin ice
I had some vague anticipation of what reception to expect
that I'd be harbouring just false hopes that would all be dashed and wrecked

I had a fatalistic notion that I was heading for a fall
and I quite frankly didn't rate my chances of getting anywhere at all
but then I summoned up the courage to ask, albeit timidly
if maybe you might go out on a date involving strictly you and me

and then you took me by surprise - you said yes
you know you took me by surprise - you said yes

your reply to me confounded expectation, and I do have to say
the unexpected shock completely overcame me in the loveliest way

I'm not the brainiest of people, I'm nothing much to shout about
I know I overstep the bounds of conceit to have nerve to ask you out
I really don't have much to offer in the way of intellect
it was the foolhardiest of suggestions, and one I thought you would reject

and then you took me by surprise - you said yes
