Once Before

sensitive and raw, frightened to expose myself to pain once more
I timidly recoil and hide, safe inside my shell
with tentative uncertainty I found in you someone to trust and tell

with my soul laid bare in a maze of bitterness and dark despair
however much I feel myself cheated and betrayed
you speak to me, restoring me, with each word I'm less and less afraid

I touch you and feel your strength come coursing through my limbs
you touch me and reassurance sings a thousand hymns
and I forget that I loved once before, lost all I loved once before

stupefied and numbed when my life's four walls collapsed, my will succumbed
I couldn't extricate myself from downheartedness
I needed someone else's help to care again for future happiness

take me by the hand, your sustaining presence helps me understand
I overcome despondency, I harbour hope instead
I feel in you security, and belief a future lies ahead
