Don't Leave Me Out

I'm trying to gain access to someone inside
and then to convince them there's no need to hide
to shed their mistrusting of feelings laid bare
and gently persuade them that dreams are to share

all words of persuasion, whichever I choose
they seek to deflect them for fear they might bruise
they're chary and wary and raise the alarm
suspicious that closeness will bring only harm

I need to find some way to the forbidden zone
I am going to find some way they are in themselves not afraid to be known

despite all approaches, the entrance is blocked
admission denied me, the doors have been locked
I need to discover a way to begin
to lower defences that won't let me in

I need to find some way to the forbidden zone
I am going to find some way they are in themselves not afraid to be known

I need to convince them to let me come near
and if they but open they need have no fear
they will have protection embracing with me
in self-revelation and intimacy
