Breakfast on My Own
(lyrics by myself and by forgotten someone [my apologies] believed now in Canada)
well I woke up this morning
stumbled out of bed
set the world in motion
put the stars back in my head
the coffee on the table
steaming up with rage
eyes washed out with newsprint
as I turned from page to page
always in the morning hours
it gets to me the most
and gives a bitter aftertaste
to marmalade on toast
when the evening comes I can fool myself
when the evening comes I am strong
but when morning comes it says everything is wrong
when the evening comes I can fool myself
when the evening comes I am strong
but when morning comes it says everything is wrong
the postman brought me memories
of many happy years
ths statement from our joint account
and mortgage in arrears
but now I am accustomed
experience has shown
to grit my teeth and start each day
with breakfast on my own
