Someone I Love To Know

you know, I have to say you have a funny way of rubbing your eyes
when soft light falls upon your face as morning breaks
I know to a fine art how strong to make the cup of coffee you like
how long to let the milk be soaking your cornflakes
I recognise expressions of concern after you've put the news on
and after that, I even know the order when you put your shoes on
I know precisely where your fingertips will grip a tube of toothpaste
you always squeeze however much the brush allows
the way you tilt your head, the way you smile, is as familiar to me
as is the way you have of slanting your eyebrows
as seasons come and go and intimacies grow
you're someone that I love to know

still even now I'll look and I'll see what I've not seen before
a beautiful new something of you, and love you even more

when you're about to sneeze, another thing that I have noticed of late
you have a slight, distinctive wiggle of your nose
and on remembering days when I bring home a special present for you
I bear in mind your favourite flower is a rose
as seasons come and go and intimacies grow
you're someone that I love to know
